Communication

KakaoTalk

Korea's default messaging app. Used by virtually everyone β€” friends, colleagues, businesses, and government services. Many Korean services require a KakaoTalk account. Group chats are the standard way to coordinate with coworkers and social groups.

Papago

Naver's translation app. Supports Korean, English, Japanese, Chinese, Vietnamese, Thai, Indonesian, French, Spanish, and more. Features text, voice, camera (point at signs), and conversation mode. More accurate for Korean than Google Translate.

The most accurate map app for Korea. Shows bus/subway routes, walking directions, real-time transit info, and restaurant reviews. English interface available. Google Maps has limited functionality in Korea due to data restrictions.

Kakao Map

Similar to Naver Map with strong transit directions. Also used for finding nearby restaurants, cafes, and services.

Google Maps does not provide driving directions or detailed transit info in Korea. Use Naver Map or Kakao Map instead.

Transportation

Kakao T

Korea's primary taxi-hailing app. Also offers designated driver service (λŒ€λ¦¬μš΄μ „), bike rental, and parking. Supports credit card payment through the app β€” no cash needed.

Korail Talk

Coupang Eats

Fast food delivery with English interface. Part of the Coupang ecosystem.

Baedal Minjok (λ°°λ‹¬μ˜λ―Όμ‘±)

Korea's most popular delivery app. Huge restaurant selection. Korean interface only, but Papago camera mode can help translate menus.

Coupang

Korea's largest e-commerce platform. Rocket Delivery items arrive next day (often same day). Fresh groceries via Rocket Fresh. English interface available for basic functions.

  2. Naver Pay β€” Online and offline payments. Widely accepted.
  3. Samsung Pay β€” Works at any card terminal (uses MST technology).
  4. Toss β€” Easy bank transfers between individuals. Also offers banking and investment services.
