T-money Card
T-money is a rechargeable transportation card accepted nationwide. Purchase and recharge at subway stations and convenience stores across the country.
Where you can use T-money:
- Buses and subways
- Trains (including KTX)
- Taxis
- Inter-city and express buses
- Highway tollgates
- Convenience stores, bakeries, and fast food restaurants
Using T-money gives you a discount on bus and subway fares compared to paying cash. Free transfers between bus and subway are available within 30 minutes.
Subway
Seoul's subway system has over 20 lines covering the metropolitan area. It is the most efficient way to travel in Seoul. Signs and announcements are available in Korean, English, Chinese, and Japanese.
Operating hours: Approximately 05:30 to midnight (varies by line and station).
Base fare: Around 1,250 KRW with T-money (1,350 KRW with single-use ticket). Extra charges apply for distances over 10 km.
Bus
Seoul's bus system is color-coded for easy identification:
- Blue buses โ Trunk routes connecting major areas across the city
- Green buses โ Branch routes connecting neighborhoods to subway stations
- Red buses โ Express routes connecting Seoul to satellite cities
- Yellow buses โ Circular routes within downtown Seoul
Taxis
Taxis are widely available and relatively affordable.
- Regular taxi โ Base fare around 4,800 KRW. Orange or silver colored.
- Deluxe taxi (mobeom) โ Black with a gold stripe. Higher fare, more space.
- International taxi โ Drivers speak foreign languages. Can be reserved via 1644-2255.
Late-night surcharge (20%) applies between midnight and 4:00 AM. Payment by T-money or credit card is accepted in all taxis.
KTX (High-Speed Train)
Korea's high-speed rail connects major cities. Seoul to Busan takes about 2 hours 30 minutes.

Driving in Korea
International Driving Permit
An International Driving Permit (IDP) issued under the Geneva Convention is valid in Korea for one year from arrival. After that, you must obtain a Korean driver's license.
Converting a Foreign License
Foreigners from countries with a reciprocal agreement can convert their license by passing a written test and aptitude test (no driving test required). Check eligibility at your local driver's license examination office.
